"Women are the backbone of all societies. They do a substantial part of the work, and play a major role in raising the future generation yet they are largely powerless. The decisions that count are made by men and foisted upon women."

What Women Want – X. Must be Humorous (2 of 2)

The sexes evaluate a sense of humor differently

There is a basic difference here.  Research indicates that
women want someone who makes them laugh.  Men want someone who
laughs at their jokes.

Martie Hasselton, Associate Professor of Psychology,
University of California in Los Angeles, has this to say:  “Humor
studies are finally starting to get traction.  It was considered
a frivolous topic, but the research is showing that humor is
playing a surprising and important role in human relationships,
perhaps as important as physical attraction.”

Humor beats breaking an expensive object in a moment of
rage.  There is nothing like mirth to defuse anger.

Finally, when the couple can no longer laugh together, it’s
a sign that the relationship is ailing, and that quick measures
should be taken to address the contentious issues.

Why the difference between the genders?

Scientists say that one possible explanation is the sexes
priorities when it comes to procreation.

A man wants to pass on his genes.  For that to happen, he
needs to seduce a woman first.  Therefore, he needs sufficient
signs that say, “I like you.”  If she laughs at his jokes, it’s
definitely a good sign.  Enjoying her jokes is fine, however, he
much prefers the reassurance offered by her enjoying his sense of
humor.

A woman will invest a lot of time and energy raising her
child.  She wants, among other qualities, an intelligent man to
help out.  Funny men are attractive to women since humor is
considered an indication of both intelligence and creativity.

The matter, however, goes far beyond giving our genes a
chance to produce superior offsprings.  Humor establish a
connection between a couple and tend to reinforce it over time.

In a long-term relationship, humor can become a private
language between two people.  Even a minor incident, which may
seem totally innocuous to outsiders, can leave two people who are
“in the know” in stitches.

Laughter brings a measure of comfort in an awkward conflict.
