The Sublime Adventure – LXVII. The Supreme Being (1 of 7)
Date Posted: August 6th, 2009
It was with great trepidation that I approached this
difficult subject. It was no easy task to explain the nature of
the Supreme Being, and still keep it simple and approachable to
you.
I gave the matter careful thought and have devised the
following methodology:
First, I am giving you in point form a general overview,
based on information from the Book, of this phase of divinity.
Second, I am quoting passages from the Book to elaborate
upon, and confirm, what I’ve said previously. Note that some
passages may be unrelated to the subject matter, they are here to
add additional meaning to what has been said in the course of
this long narrative. Finally, some quotations are simply
included for the beauty of the language! I hope you will find
them as touching as I did.
1) Long has this planet struggled with the notion of the
Trinity. After many centuries we were able to formulate (but not
explain) this enigma.
The Trinity is incomprehensible: Three in One, One in
Three. What does it mean? It’s a mystery, we simply revere it
and accept it. The Scripture leaves no doubt that God is Father,
that the same God is Son, and that this one and same God is
Spirit and that they are not simply three manifestations of God,
but each “equal in majesty, undivided in splendor, yet one Lord,
one God ever to be adored in your everlasting glory.” (Preface
for Trinity Sunday).
Little did I know when I started reading the Urantia Book
that I would welcome the Trinity mystery, not because it’s a
problem with a solution, but rather because it’s at least a
familiar issue.
The Book confronted me right in the introduction with terms
like Supreme, Ultimate, Finite, Absonite, and Absolute. Then
there was the Qualified Absolute and the Unqualified Absolute.
Regarding Personalities, there was God the Supreme (the subject
of this section), God the Sevenfold, God the Ultimate, and God
the Absolute. And this is only a sample of terms that are
explained in the foreword. Is it any wonder that back then, the
introduction was largely incomprehensible to me? Yet, I forged
ahead and was largely able to understand what followed. However,
terms like the Supreme, Finite, Infinite, Qualified Absolute and
so on were scattered throughout the text; they were teasing me,
and eventually I had to study them; I managed, to some extent, to
understand them.
In this part, I will only talk of God the Supreme since he
is an integral part of the ascender career.
2) I reiterate what I said in the previous section, namely
that the Supreme Being, God the Supreme, the Almighty Supreme,
the Supreme Deity, simply the Supreme, and at times other names
used by the Revelator, all refer to the same divine and evolving
being.
3) To understand and provide to my readers an overview of
the Almighty Supreme, I carefully read papers 115 to 118 (and to
a limited extent the introduction to the Book). They were
sponsored by a Mighty Messenger temporarily sojourning on
Urantia. They are the kind of extraordinary papers that when you
read them, they tell you without the shadow of a doubt that
you’re holding in your hands a Book written by Celestial Beings.
A Book commissioned by our universe and superuniverse rulers that
conveys the fact that they care about Urantia, this isolated and
long-suffering planet.
